'The photobook of legend'

The rare true first edition of Robert Frank's masterpiece - this is the photo book that redefined what a photo book could be - personal, poetic, real.

This example was published in October of 1958, by the French publisher Robert Delpire in Paris. The following year Grove Press published The Americans in New York with an introduction by Jack Kerouac no less.

Alongside Frank's groundbreaking photographs is text by authors such as Simone de Beauvoir, Erskine Caldwell, William Faulkner, Henry Miller and John Steinbeck

Jack Kerouac - “Robert Frank…he sucked a sad poem right out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world.”

Ed Ruscha - “Seeing The Americans in a college bookshop was a stunning, ground-trembling experience for me. But I realized this man’s achievement could not be mined or imitated in any way, because he had already done it, sewn it up and gone home. What I was left with was the vapors of his talent. I had to make my own kind of art. But wow! The Americans!”

First edition, first impression. Minor toning and foxing as is normal with this title but overall a very good to near-fine example. Rare.

Published by Robert Delpire, Paris, 1958.
