A fantastic bit of press. Ahead of Emerald Fennell’s take on Wuthering Heights, we were recently featured in The World of Interiors after I uncovered one of the rarest Brontë survivors you can hope to see. While sourcing books in Los Angeles, I came across a first American edition of Wuthering Heights from 1848, still in its original cloth. Only two copies in this state are known, so finding one tucked away in Hollywood felt like striking gold.
The article looks at the strange history of the book’s American publication, issued anonymously as “by the author of Jane Eyre”, and explains why copies in original cloth almost never survive. They were cheaply made and never meant to last. This one somehow did.
It is a brilliant feature and the most detailed coverage yet of how the book surfaced and why it matters.
