An ‘affordable’ Brontë first edition

A first edition of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, one of only two known copies in the original cloth and published in the US in 1848 while the author was still alive, will be on display at the Mandarin Oriental before going on sale with Bayliss Rare Books. Although first editions published in London in 1847 command prices in excess of $200,000, this version is a more accessible example. As Oliver Bayliss explains: “They were cheaply made for a mass audience and were never intended to last. Finding one still in its original cloth is like finding a ghost. For collectors, this is the earliest obtainable edition of Wuthering Heights; the only one you can own without remortgaging the house or selling the car.”
