This acclaimed work began as a sequel to J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 children's fantasy novel The Hobbit, and developed into something grander. Written between 1937 and 1949, much of it in letters to his son in the midst of WWII, it was eventually released in 1954-1955 as a trilogy to a growing fanbase. It has since become one of the most influential contributions to literature this century, enjoyed by adults and children alike.
