The Lord of the Rings | 1954–1955, first edition, first impression set, signed by J. R. R. Tolkien

£60,000.00 GBP

A fine, first edition, first impression set of The Lord of the Rings, signed by Tolkien.

First editions, first impressions of The Fellowship of the Ring (1954), The Two Towers (1954), and The Return of the King (1955), finely bound in full crimson morocco with gilt borders, raised bands, and gilt title labels. Each front board features Tolkien’s Eye of Sauron device in gilt, with the author’s monogram to the spines. Each volume complete with half-titles and folding maps, crisp and intact.

Signed by J. R. R. Tolkien on a card laid into the front free endpaper of The Fellowship of the Ring.

An immaculate presentation of one of the most important literary works of the twentieth century, charting the epic struggle for Middle-earth and the triumph of courage over power. Tolkien’s signature is exceptionally scarce on the first edition set, and near-mint examples of all three first impressions are seldom encountered.

A beautifully bound and preserved example of the greatest fantasy trilogy ever written, signed by its creator. Top-tier Tolkien first impressions in fine condition are rarely seen, and this signed set stands among the finest to appear on the market.
