This original Peter Beard photograph represents one of Peter Beard’s most iconic and sought-after images, made even more remarkable by its double signature, sterling provenance, and status as an early print of the famous Loliondo Lion Charge.
The photograph is signed twice by Beard: once on the back of the print, where he signed, dated it "Nov 77," and annotated "I.C.P." in pencil; and again on the mount, where he signed, titled, and dated it in pencil.
This original print comes from the personal collection of Robert Kirschenbaum (1936-2023), a pivotal figure in the international photography world. Beard gifted this piece to Kirschenbaum following the opening of his landmark exhibition at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in November 1977. The exhibition marked Beard’s first solo show, showcasing not only his photographs but also elephant carcasses, burned diaries, African artifacts, and personal memorabilia. This was a defining moment in Beard’s career, making this particular print—presented to such an influential figure at such an important occasion—exceptionally significant.
Kirschenbaum himself was a key figure in expanding the global photography scene, particularly in Japan and Asia, where he introduced many leading photographers of the era, including Beard. The provenance and historical context behind this piece elevate it beyond its artistic value.
